Allen A. Hinman 1985-2004
The Reverend Allen Hinman was born in Louisville, Kentucky on September 28, 1942. He earned an AB degree from Cornell University in 1964. In August of 1969 he married Marion Iris van Gelder. He then went on to earn a BD from Union Theological Seminary in 1970. From 1970-1971 Father Hinman continued his studies in Anglicanism at The General Theological Seminary. He was ordained to the diaconate in July of 1970 and priested in June of 1971, both by Bishop Leland F. Stark. He served as assistant priest at All Souls Church in New York City from 1970-1973 as well as being priest-in-charge in 1974. From 1975-1982 he was assistant priest at St. Philip’s Church, also in New York City, where he became the priest-in-charge from 1983-1985.
Father Hinman was called as Rector of Saint John’s Church in 1985. He served a tenure of nineteen years, the second longest in the history of the parish.
During Father Hinman’s rectorate there were many accomplishments. Many improvements were made to the fabric of the buildings, most notably the replacement of the main roofs on the church and the rectory, the pointing of all exterior walls, the refinishing of the wood floors, re-designing and rewiring of the electric service in the nave and the installation of air-conditioning.
Liturgically, Father Hinman maintained our traditional celebration of the Sacraments using both Rites One and Two. By far the most successful observances of the Season of Lent were begun under his leadership, when the service of Stations of the Cross and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament attracted many parishioners and visitors.
As a pastor, Father Hinman was always very supportive of our sick and shut-ins. His frequent visits to bring them the Blessed Sacrament and provide guidance as well as company have been appreciated by them very much.
Father Hinman resigned as Rector on October 3, 2004. |
